From sister to mother

My daughter says she has wanted to be a foster parent since she was eight years old. I believe it. She was the best foster sister ever. When her friends came over, or when we ran into one of them in the community, she introduced her foster siblings as her brothers and sisters. It didn't matter to her if they were a different color, or handicapped, or malformed in anyway. She didn't ever proceed brother or sister with the word "foster." She accepted everyone into our family with no strings attached.

Now she is driving me nuts. The classes don't even start until February and she already has plastic tableware and toys for her future foster children. Her great-uncle, who she never met, recently passed away and left her a nice little inheritance. She bought a two-bedroom condo, and we agonized over what she should do with that extra room. Should she make it into a study? She is going to be starting school in the fall, she wants to be a lawyer for DSS and advocate for the children, so she will need a place to study. Should she get a room-mate? She doesn't NEED one, her condo is paid for in full and her job will cover her monthly expenses. Besides, room-mates can be a pain. When I signed up for foster care training, she asked the social worker how old she would have to be to have her own foster home. We assumed it to be 21, and were amazed that it was 18. Now, going on 20, she will be a foster parent herself. Do I have any doubts that she will be great? None whatsoever. She will be the best. Well, maybe not better than me....
